Insidious Charms: A Glimpse into Eternity
Insidious Charms Statement Throughout history, women have put their bodies, and their psyches through torturous measures trying to live up to the elusive thing that is beauty. We have constricted our breathing and injected ourselves with poison. We have teetered precariously, balancing on miniscule pedestals and we have crafted our flesh into acceptable contours. But we have not been forced into doing so. We have consensually subjected ourselves to these ridiculous and dangerous ordeals. Not only do I fear and rage against this but also grudgingly embrace it. I am left with a love/hate relationship with the idea of beauty and the quest to attain it. These images have emerged from this dichotomy. Through a combination of technical processes, I am able to merge representations of the accepted and established notions of what is beautiful with those of my manufactured grotesque. I create imagery that attempts to glorify and rebuke, ultimately giving way to a different definition of beauty, one of engaging oddity and lush ambiguity. All of the images in this body of work were made from January 2003 until the present. Mordancage images are one-of-a-kind in sizes up to 16x20. The Mordancage and Digital Collage pieces are archival digital prints on canvas, printed in editions of 25 and in sizes from 16x20 to 24x36. Some images are framed in antique frames or oval frames with convex glass.
